A very important task our Chapter carries out each year is an aquatic invertebrate survey of the Carmans river.   We obtain a DEC permit to acquire these samples which are then sent to DEC for processing to measure the water quality.

The finer screens allow the small aquatic invertebrates to pass through while screening out the debris. At each stage the material remaing in the screen is carefully checked for larger-size invertebrates.

Examples of what we are looking for are amphipods (a.k.a. scuds) and larval stages of aquatic invertebrates (a.k.a. nymphs). The abundances and relative proportions of what we find will help to measure the water quality in the Carmans river.

Our samples are bottled in preservative and labeled as to the location in which the sample was taken (in this case gate E of Southaven County Park). It is then processed by NY DEC to measure water quality.
